Congrats! You’ve aced the theory test and now you’ve reached the fun part

Getting out there and driving IRL. Daunting? Maybe a little. But you’ve got this. Make sure you’ve brushed up on these rules for L platers before you set out on the road.

L Plater Restrictions

Speed Limit: Max 100 km/h

Blood Alcohol Concentration: 0.0%

Mobile Devices
: Prohibited

Passengers
: No restrictions, as long as one of your passengers is the supervisor.

Demerit Points
: No more than 4 points  from when you get your learner's permit to the end of your first year with P plates.

Cars
: Go for the safest you can afford. Find out how safer cars save lives.  
Towing
: No restrictions on towing, as long as you have a supervising driver and follow L plate rules and standard towing rules. Make sure you stick L plates on the towing vehicle and on the trailer or caravan.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it

You’ll need to complete a minimum of 50 supervised driving hours, including five hours at night, before you can sit your Hazard Perception Test and Practical Driving Assessment. If you’re 25 or older, you’re exempt from the log book requirements.

You’ve got 3 years to learn

A learner’s permit is valid for three years. So take a deep breath and enjoy the journey. You’ve got plenty of time to get the hang of things.
