RULES AS AN L PLATER
Congrats! You’ve aced the theory test and now you’ve reached the fun part
Getting out there and driving IRL. Daunting? Maybe a little. But you’ve got this. Make sure you’ve brushed up on these rules for L platers before you set out on the road.
L Plater Restrictions
Speed Limit: Max 100 km/h
Blood Alcohol Concentration: 0.0%
Mobile Devices: Prohibited
Passengers: No restrictions, as long as one of your passengers is the supervisor.
Demerit Points: No more than 4 points from when you get your learner's permit to the end of your first year with P plates.
Cars: Go for the safest you can afford. Find out how safer cars save lives.
Towing: No restrictions on towing, as long as you have a supervising driver and follow L plate rules and standard towing rules. Make sure you stick L plates on the towing vehicle and on the trailer or caravan.
Important stuff to know
As you know, L platers can only drive with a supervising driver. Your supervising driver needs to hold a current and valid licence of at least four years.
You’ll need to display your L plates any time you’re driving. Make sure they’re clearly visible at the front and back of the car. You can buy your L plates or print them out.
You can easily print out your plates for your ride.
Make sure you always have your learner's permit with you too. You can face penalties for not having this with you while you’re driving. So run that mental check every time: plates, permit, then keys.
L platers aren’t allowed to drive within Kings Park or where signs prohibit learner drivers. Other than that, you’re encouraged to build experience in all road types and conditions, including the freeway.
Next steps
Your mission, should you choose to accept it
You’ll need to complete a minimum of 50 supervised driving hours, including five hours at night, before you can sit your Hazard Perception Test and Practical Driving Assessment. If you’re 25 or older, you’re exempt from the log book requirements.
You’ve got 3 years to learn
A learner’s permit is valid for three years. So take a deep breath and enjoy the journey. You’ve got plenty of time to get the hang of things.
