THE GAME-OVER FIVE
The stats are in, and these are the five most dangerous driver behaviours.
These can lead you to lose your life, or risk someone else’s. Unfortunately we can’t respawn in real life – so if any of these ring a bell, best check yourself. Don’t let the game be over before you even begin.
Speeding
Speeding is a major factor in serious crashes and it takes less than you might think to get into trouble. Increase your speed just 5km/h over the speed limit , and you double the risk of a deadly crash. Take it steady and get there in one piece – just like ya mum says.
Drink & drug driving
Drink driving kills 32 people on average every year. There are so many ways to avoid becoming the cringe guy pulled over at the booze bus. Take it in turns to be Designated Dave, rideshare it, bus it, train it, or just stay at a mate’s.
Seatbelts
Seatbelts are a vibe. They’re a very simple way to live long, look hot and prosper. They also don’t work if you decide not to wear one. Over the past five years, 20% of people who died in a vehicle crash weren’t wearing a seatbelt. Plus, there are major penalties and demerits if you or your passenger are travelling unrestrained. Always be checking.
Fatigue
Fatigue can be sneaky when you’re driving. Whether you’ve had a late night, an early start or you’re just yawning your head off on a boring drive, remember that fatigue crashes are twice as likely to be fatal than any other. Take breaks at least every two hours and recognise when you need to pull over for a break. Ideally somewhere you can get more snacks, but anywhere safe will do.
Mobile phones & distractions
We all know our screens are addictive. But distractions including mobile phones are, in simple terms, also dangerous AF. Distracted drivers have worse reaction times, speed selection and braking behaviour. Even a glance can put you at risk, so select your playlist before you drive, put your phone out of sight and mind, and treat yourself to a lil’ digital detox whenever you’re out on the road.
Hit the road running
Test your driving decisions without even leaving your doona. Do you have what it takes for a mishap-free journey, or will you hit a whoopsie on the curb?
